Why this matters

If you serve customers in a specific town, city or region, the people who matter most are the ones close to you. Local SEO is how you show up for them.

Google has confirmed that relevance, distance and prominence are the factors behind local ranking. In plain words: how well you match what someone searched for, how far away you are, and how well known you are. You cannot change distance, so the other two are where your effort counts.

What local SEO UK involves

There are five parts. They work together, so one on its own will not do much.

A clear service area. Decide which towns or areas you actually serve. If you travel to customers, Google lets a service area business list up to 20 areas within about two hours of driving time from your base.

An optimised Google Business Profile. This is your free listing on Google Search and Maps. We cover the setup step by step in our Google Business Profile setup guide [ADD LINK TO GUIDE], so we will not repeat it here.

Strong local landing pages. These are pages on your website that speak to a particular area and service, rather than one page trying to cover everywhere.

Consistent location signals. These are the details that tell Google where you are, such as your address and area names. They should be shown the same way wherever they appear.

Decent review health. This is the overall picture your reviews give. It covers how many you have, how good they are and whether you reply to them.

A realistic starting point

You do not need to do everything at once. Start here:

  1. Write down the towns and areas you genuinely serve.
  2. Check you are eligible for a profile. Google says online only businesses with no physical location customers can visit, and no in person visits to customers, are not eligible.
  3. Set up and verify your profile using our setup guide.
  4. Plan one page on your website for each main area and service.
  5. Check that your business details match everywhere they appear.
  6. Look at your reviews and reply to any you have missed.

Local SEO takes time. We would rather give you an honest view for your area than promise a date.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Listing areas you do not really serve. Stick to places you can properly cover.
  • Doing only one part. A profile with no matching website pages, or pages with no reviews behind them, leaves gaps.
  • Different details in different places. Mixed up addresses or names make your location harder to read.
  • Ignoring reviews. They are part of how your business is judged, so keep an eye on them.
  • Assuming you are eligible. Check the rules before you spend time on a profile.

FAQs

Do I need a shop or office to do local SEO?

No. If you visit customers, you can run as a service area business. If you have no place customers can visit and no visits to customers, you are not eligible for a Google Business Profile.

Can I do this if I work from home?

Yes. Google's guidelines tell home based owners to clear their residential address from the profile, which makes it a service area business. Your home address then stays private.

How long does local SEO take to work?

It is not instant, and it depends on your area and your starting point. We will not give you a made up number.

Which of the five parts matters most?

None of them on its own. The five work together, so a steady, balanced effort is better than perfecting one and ignoring the rest.
